About BMW codes
The codes on this page are manufacturer-specific codes defined for BMW. The list uses BMW’s own system names — VANOS camshaft timing, the DISA intake manifold changeover valve, secondary air injection (SAP) and timing chain stretch. These names do not exist in the standard OBD-II vocabulary, so a generic code list cannot tell you what these codes mean.
Most of the codes come from the engine control unit (DME) and the stability control module (DSC); the body-side codes are concentrated on the FRM.
The codes in this table are concentrated in these system groups: chassis (11), emissions and exhaust (11), body and comfort (7).
Manufacturer-specific codes are those with 1 (sometimes 2 or 3) as the second digit: they are defined by the manufacturer, not by SAE/ISO. That is why the same code number can indicate two different faults on two different makes, and why a generic code list is of no use for them.

Read fault codes on your own vehicle
With an ELM327-based BLE OBD2 adapter, CarCoding reads confirmed, pending and permanent fault codes separately, pulls the freeze frame and explains every code in plain language. Clearing codes is done from the app as well. The app is free to download.
Some advanced features require an in-app purchase.
Data source: the CarCoding fault code database. Code definitions follow the SAE J2012 standard; manufacturers may use different wording for their own codes. Everything on this page is generated from the code-specific database records.
