Engine Fault Codes

General engine codes usually report an outcome rather than a cause: the control unit saw that expected behaviour did not happen but could not narrow the blame to one circuit.

How does a fault code arise in the Engine group?

This heading collects general engine codes that cannot be assigned to a single subsystem. The code reports an observation about the engine as a whole; it does not say which part caused it.

General engine codes should therefore be read together with the other codes stored at the same time. The neighbouring codes often tell the real story, while the general code only reports the result.

Freeze frame is especially valuable in this group: knowing whether the code was stored during a cold start, at idle or under load immediately narrows the search.

With an ELM327-based BLE OBD2 adapter, CarCoding reads confirmed, pending and permanent fault codes separately, pulls the freeze frame and explains every code in plain language. Clearing codes is done from the app as well. The app is free to download.

Some advanced features require an in-app purchase.

Data source: the CarCoding fault code database. Code definitions follow the SAE J2012 standard; manufacturers may use different wording for their own codes. Everything on this page is generated from the code-specific database records.
