How does a fault code arise in the Timing group?
The timing group watches the mechanical and signal relationship between the crankshaft and the camshaft. The control unit compares the pulses from the two sensors and expects the angular difference to stay inside a defined window.
That is why codes here are correlation codes: the two signals do not agree. The cause can be a stretched timing chain or belt that has jumped a tooth, but equally worn tensioners and guides, a variable valve timing actuator that cannot lock at its target angle, or a damaged sensor or reluctor ring.
Timing codes are predominantly in the critical severity class in this database. Continuing to drive with a mechanical timing error can widen the scope of the repair; clearing the code and carrying on is the most expensive time you can lose in this group.
Fault codes in this group
The database holds 5 codes in this group. Each code has its own page with the meaning, possible causes and diagnostic steps:
Read fault codes on your own vehicle
With an ELM327-based BLE OBD2 adapter, CarCoding reads confirmed, pending and permanent fault codes separately, pulls the freeze frame and explains every code in plain language. Clearing codes is done from the app as well. The app is free to download.
Some advanced features require an in-app purchase.
Data source: the CarCoding fault code database. Code definitions follow the SAE J2012 standard; manufacturers may use different wording for their own codes. Everything on this page is generated from the code-specific database records.
