About VAG codes
Makes covered: Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Porsche.
This page covers five makes together. The CarCoding database keeps their manufacturer-specific codes in a single VAG table, because these makes largely share electronic architecture and code definitions within the same group. Publishing a separate page per make would mean publishing identical content five times.
The list uses VAG’s own component numbers, such as the G28 crankshaft position sensor and the G40 camshaft position sensor, along with group-specific systems like DSG transmission communication. That component numbering does not exist in standard OBD-II; reading the code correctly requires the group’s own vocabulary.
The codes in this table are concentrated in these system groups: chassis (5), network and can bus (5), fuel system (3).
Manufacturer-specific codes are those with 1 (sometimes 2 or 3) as the second digit: they are defined by the manufacturer, not by SAE/ISO. That is why the same code number can indicate two different faults on two different makes, and why a generic code list is of no use for them.
Fault codes for this make
The database holds 24 manufacturer-specific codes for VAG. Each code has its own page with the meaning, possible causes and diagnostic steps:
Read fault codes on your own vehicle
With an ELM327-based BLE OBD2 adapter, CarCoding reads confirmed, pending and permanent fault codes separately, pulls the freeze frame and explains every code in plain language. Clearing codes is done from the app as well. The app is free to download.
Some advanced features require an in-app purchase.
Data source: the CarCoding fault code database. Code definitions follow the SAE J2012 standard; manufacturers may use different wording for their own codes. Everything on this page is generated from the code-specific database records.
